The small nonprofit team at Soundwaves Art Foundation needed a faster way to digitize artwork and canvas prints. Their photography setup took too long and slowed down production. They have moved to an HD Apeiron/42 large format contact-free scanning workflow that is simple to run and easy to adjust.

“It’s really easy to use. It’s a huge timesaver and I just feel like we get so much more done since we’ve had it.”

Turning music into charity

Soundwaves Art Foundation creates artwork based on soundwave files from popular songs. Founder and art director Tim Wakefield turns each soundwave into an abstract piece of art. He has worked with more than 500 artists, from Paul McCartney to Billie Eilish, creating limited edition prints that the musicians often sign.

These projects have helped raise over $15 million for charity, with all profits going to good causes. That process creates a steady flow of originals that must be digitized fast and in high quality.

Soundwaves Art Foundation used to rely on a photography setup. That meant unrolling the piece, stretching it, mounting it, and then testing and adjusting the camera before they could capture a usable image. John Stendrini sums it up: “It’s time consuming and we are a nonprofit so we’re a really small team.”

They needed an easier path from capture to editing. Every extra step slowed down the work that helps them raise money for charity.

Interview:

Watch John Stendrini from Soundwaves Art Foundation explain why they chose the Contex HD Apeiron/42 large format scanner, and how it replaced a slow, space-hungry photography setup with a faster, simpler workflow.

Fast scans with minimal touch ups

With their new scanning workflow which includes a Contex HD Apeiron/42 contact-free scanner, the team can capture the artwork fast and move straight into editing within minutes.

“Literally, once it scans, we could walk over to any of these computers and start editing right away,” says John Stendrini. He adds that the scan quality is so strong that post capture editing is minimal.

Better control of surfaces

When scanning painted or textured originals, light matters. John Stendrini highlights how the scanner helps handle light variations, and how being able to adjust the light direction is a “really beautiful feature.”

That control helps them get strong results even before any fine-tuning. In day-to-day work, they are happy with the raw scans, and then do small adjustments to match their print process on glossy canvas.

Lockhart TX Gallery

Downstairs, the Soundwaves Art Foundation gallery is growing. The team now scans more than soundwave art. They have scanned oil on canvas and love the results. Next, they may offer low cost scanning and printing for local artists who need help with portfolios.

“It probably cuts our time in half if I had to guess. Maybe even more than that.”
