Danish Christmas decorations and traditions
Christmas is celebrated around the world and each country has its own traditions. Denmark is not an exception.
Braided heart
The braided, or pleated, Christmas heart is usually made of glossy colored paper, and is typically found on the Danish Christmas trees or decorating the house during all of December. The oldest preserved braided Christmas heart dates back to the 1860s and is made by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen who is also believed to be the “inventor”.
Paper cone
The paper cones were originally hung on the tree, and filled with cookies and sweets. In the “good old days” there were not a lot of presents under the tree, but you had the content of the paper cones to look forward to. On Christmas eve, December 24, Danes “dance” around the Christmas tree holding hands and singing Christmas hymns. One of the more popular songs says: “Først skal træet vises – siden skal det spises” means “First you show off the tree – then you eat it”, hinting at the content of paper cones and hearts
Cookie
The cookie made with the Christmas Decor PRO preset is called “brunkage” or brown cake, and is a cookie you typically only eat in December. A precursor of the brunkage is “peberkage” or pepper cake and dates back to the middle ages where the mix of spices included pepper, hence the name. Nowadays, the predominant spice in brunkage is cinnamon.
Snow flakes
Some years, we actually do get snow at Christmas time in Denmark. But truth be told, most years we fake it with cutout silk paper snow flakes. The positive thing about these is that they will keep their shape, even inside.
Bells
Not exclusive to Denmark, but there’s just no Christmas without bells and chimes!
